SHILLONG: Sohra, known as the wettest place on earth, is grappling with water problems even as plans to find ways to conserve water is being pursued.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem said, “The place is getting huge amount of rainfall and we have to find out ways to conserve water.”
Referring to reports about Sohra facing water problems, the MLA said, “This is an example that we must find out ways and means on how to conserve water. We must put in place numerous methods like rain water harvesting management. As of now, we don’t have any technique to conserve water.”
“We get heavy rainfall which unfortunately flows down to Bangladesh and if we come up with conservation methods, it will be very beneficial for us,” he added. Mylliem said he had discussions with other officers to resolve the water problems.
Bursting of pipes
Mylliem said the source of water is sufficient but the contributory factor to the water problem in Sohra is the bursting of water pipes when full pressure is applied.
“Full pressure cannot be applied because that causes bursting of water pipes. Moreover, the pipes are over 30 years old and rusted,” he said.
Mylliem informed that proposal has been placed for Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme from the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) of the North Eastern Council.
“A proposal has been placed under NESIDS to replace the pipes and the sanctioned amount is Rs 25 crore. The process of the proposal is on,” he said.
