JOWAI: Three persons, including the headman of a village in Amlarem civil sub-division, were murdered on Friday afternoon allegedly over personal enmity.
Headman Thomlin Surong, village secretary Hamboi Langshiang and another village member Shan Khongiong were killed on the spot at Amlanai village at Trangblang in West Jaintia Hills.
The three others are in critical condition.
According to sources, Surong, his secretary and four others were travelling in a Maruti car and on reaching Trangblang, 45 km from Jowai, around 2.45pm, they were suddenly attacked with lethal weapons.
The accused persons, including brothers George Remingson and George Hemingson Manner, surrendered before Amlarem police along with their cousin brother, Lasawki Manner.
Police later arrested George William Kerry Manner a younger brother of the first two accused along with friend and cousin brother Khamti Myrlia and Tam Manner. The injured persons were later rushed to Pdeinshakap PHC where they were referred to Jowai Hospital after first aid.
Sources informed that few days ago, the headman assaulted George Rosming Manner. “Manner used to smuggle cattle to Bangladesh and the Amlanai headman caught his men and later Manner was summoned and was assaulted by the headman and his people”, sources alleged.
The manner family is also having a land dispute with the Headman and some people from Amlanai village. The matter was still pending in the court. The manner family had earlier alleged the headman has tried to illegally claim the right of ownership against their huge area of land situated at Amlanai village.
