SHILLONG: In the wake of a recent Supreme Court directive asking all states and Union territories not to appoint any police officer as acting Director General of Police (DGP), Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has directed the Law department to examine the Court ruling.
The incumbent Meghalaya DGP, S.B Singh, who was due to retire on April 30, was asked by the Ministry of Home Affairs to continue serving as the state’s DGP for another three months (till July 30) in ‘public interest’.
“We are moving as per the directions of the Supreme Court but it will not be correct on my part to comment any further since the Law department is examining the matter,” Sangma said while talking to reporters here on Friday.
Earlier, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra had directed all the states and Union territories to send names of senior police officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for being considered as probable candidates for the post of DGP or Police Commissioner as the case may be.
