SHILLONG: Dissidence in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) came out in the open on Friday when 16 MDCs met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and demanded removal of KHADC CEM P.N Syiem.
The MDCs also submitted a letter to Sangma highlighting grave misuse of power by Syiem.
Speaking to reporters, NPP MDC H.S Shylla said, “We want a discussion in the House on the misrule, financial irregularities and the high-handedness of the CEM and have submitted our grievances in writing to the CM.”
“We have placed a demand for removal of Syiem as the EC has been reduced to a minority”, he added.
The 16 MDCs who met the chief minister included four members from NPP, five from UDP, three each from HSPDP and PDF and one Independent.
“A no-confidence motion will be tabled in the next session of the Council,” Shylla said, while brushing aside speculation that he was being projected as the next leader of the KHADC.
Asked why they approached the chief minister instead of the governor, Shylla said, “We approached the District Council Affairs (DCA) department through the CM. Even if we had approached the governor, he would have reverted to the DCA department.”
Commenting on Syiem’s survival of two previous no-confidence motions, Shylla said, “Those things happen.”
