TURA: The body of a two year old girl child who was swept away by strong water currents from Zikzak area of South West Garo Hills district has been retrieved from neighbouring Bangladesh late Friday afternoon, a delayed report said.

The infant, Payal Koch, was supposed to follow her mother who had gone to take a bath at a nearby ring well in Magurmari village of Zikzak on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, the child reportedly headed towards the Rongki river which was barely 100 meters from their dwelling place.

The river had been in spate due to heavy torrential rains for the past few days.

When the child was noticed to have gone missing a frantic search took place and the family found her slippers by the side of the river bank.

Police alerted the BSF downstream and villagers with aid of fire and rescue personnel carried out extensive search under water but to no avail.

On Friday afternoon, Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG) personnel alerted their counterparts from the BSF about the recovery of an infant’s body across Lokichar village on a tributary of the Jinjiram river that flowed into that country.

Necessary formalities have been conducted to bring the body back for the last rites in India, informed South West Garo Hills district officials.
