SHILLONG: The High Level Committee on the relocation of Them Iew Mawlong’s residents will meet next week to deliberate on the reports of land and inventory surveys in the locality.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is heading the committee, told reporters on Saturday that the reports prepared by the Directorate of Land Records and Survey and the Shillong Municipal Board are in the final stage.
“We are hopeful that the two reports will give some direction to the committee to move ahead in suggesting a permanent solution to the long-pending issue,” Tynsong said.
When asked about the residents of the colony not cooperating with the civic body for inventory survey, he refused to comment saying he did not receive the report from the municipality board.
The committee will examine all relevant documents and recommend practically feasible solution(s) for relocation.
The city witnessed complete lawlessness for at least five days last month as protesters attacked police with stones and petrol bombs at Motphran following the assault of three local boys.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Saturday the government is keeping a close watch on the law and order in the city where the “situation is under control” a month after the violence.
However, he admitted that the city is still tense. “These things (the violence) affected livelihood and we all got affected by it,” said Sangma as he urged citizens to maintain peace.
The government is trying to find a solution to the complex issue but is not interfering in police investigation, said Sangma and assured that law would take its own course and that innocents have been released on bail.
