GUWAHATI: Newly-appointed Assam DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury on Monday said he would make all efforts to meet expectations of the govt and the aspirations of people.

“I have been briefed by my officers on the prevailing situation here. They told me the problem places are Dhemaji where the anti-big dam agitation is on and the splinter extremist issues,” the 1978 batch IPS officer said. “I will have to reinvent myself,” he said, since he was away from the state on Central deputation in the IB since 1985 and posted out of the state. Commenting on the anti-dam protests, the DGP said, “While in IB, I have seen agitations all over the country. Decisions on policy issues are taken by the government. The police has the responsibility for maintaining law and order.”

Choudhury was the Additional Director of Intelligence Bureau before being appointed as the state DGP after the retirement of his predecessor Sankar Barua on December 31 last year. (PTI)
