SHILLONG/TURA: Suspecting them to be police informers, two Garo youths were gunned down by Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
According police, Pak Momin, 26, and Engti Marak, 27, both hailing from Konchikol village were killed near their homes on Monday evening. “The GNLA suspected them to be police informers,” a senior police official said.
The bodies of the two civilians were first spotted by the public at Rongrongvillage under Resubelpara Sub-Division.
“We have also recovered a letter head of the GNLA from the bodies of the slain militant warining others not to extort money in the name of the GNLA or face the same fate,” a police official said.
Last year, the GNLA shot dead a 55-year old man in Chokpot area during a GNLA bandh and also killed Robila Marak, a mother of three kids, from Kusimkolgre of Willimnagar.
Police seize taxi: Tura police, meanwhile, have confiscated a Bolero vehicle that was being used as a private taxi without permit and which was used in an attempted case of kidnapping by GNLA militants on Saturday in Rongram bazaar.
A four-member group of GNLA militants tried to abduct a Bihari trader of Rongram bazaar in full glare of the public on Saturday afternoon but failed when the grocery shop owner shouted for help and resisted their attempt. Public from the bazaar rushed to the shouts of the trader and his wife and the militants fired of two rounds in open before escaping through Dadenggre road.
One of the militants had hired the bolero vehicle ( ML-08 B 5957) which is allegedly under the name of Rakesh A Sangma, to be son-in-law of former Minister Admiral K Sangma, from the Tura bazaar. The militant made the driver pick up three other outfit members from Dadenggre road and came down to Rongram where they tried to kidnap the trader Chotelal without any success. The militants abandoned the vehicle and the driver at Damal Asim after the failed kidnapping
attempt.
The driver was arrested and the vehicle was confiscated. (Our correspondent and agencies)
