TURA: The South Tura unit of the United Democratic Party, an ally in the ruling coalition, has upped its ante by inducting close to a hundred youth into the party fold.
Youth workers and supporters, reportedly from the Congress and the NPP, were inducted into the party in Tura on Saturday in the presence of top UDP leaders led by party president and Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy, Bindo Lanong and Jemino Mawthoh.
The entry of new supporters was facilitated by UDP leaders from Garo Hills, B G Momin, Utzol Sangma and Anand Marak.
“The entry of so many youth into our party will immensely help the UDP grow further in the Garo Hills. They have become disillusioned with the other parties,” said general secretary Anand Marak.
Interestingly, though the top leadership of the UDP was in Tura to beef up the party base in the region, no decision was taken relating to fielding a candidate against the chief minister during the meeting.
Though the Garo Hills unit of the UDP is keen to put up a candidate against Conrad K Sangma, its top leadership is reportedly against such a move preferring to back the NPP chief since it was the UDP chief himself who asked the younger son of Late P A Sangma to take over the state mantle after forging a post-poll alliance comprising of five parties and Independents.
