SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union (AMDWU)  demanded withdrawal of Labour Code on Social Security, 2018.

It may be mentioned that the central government has proposed labor reforms for streamlining labor laws and ensuring it is made more efficient.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, joint secretary of the union, Wandahun Kharsyntiew said the workers would lose their identity as a union as the Labor Code restricts freedom of association, restrictions on the right to strike.

Similarly, president of the union, Elbina Nongkhlaw said the restriction on outsiders is discouraging for the union as the union members are mostly uneducated persons.

On the other hand, Kharsyntiew said the contribution of 12.5 per cent of wages of the unorganized workers as stated in the code is very high.

“The domestic workers are earning very less and they will not be able to contribute12.5 per cent for the fund of welfare board,” she said

Nongkhlaw said that the domestic workers will take part in a rally on August 2 in Delhi.
