CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh for the construction of Gurdwara Sahib and Guru Nanak School, which were “destroyed” in the recent violence in Shillong.
Singh also assured a delegation of Sikh Sangat, led by City Gurdwara Management Committee president Gurjit Singh, which met him here, of all possible assistance for the community settled in Shillong.
The visiting delegation thanked the chief minister for his personal initiative in sending a high-level delegation to take stock of the situation.  The delegation had comprised Cabinet Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, MPs Ravneet Singh Bittu and Gurjit Singh Aujla, besides MLA Kuldip Singh Vaid.
Gurjit Singh said the move had helped instill a sense of belongingness and trust among the minority community living in Meghalaya. Responding to the issues raised by the delegation, the chief minister assured them that he would soon take up the same with his Meghalaya counterpart to ensure safety and security of the Sikhs, besides maintaining the sanctity of their religious places. Our Reporter adds: When contacted, Gurjit Singh said in their memorandum submitted to the Punjab chief minister, they never said Gurdwara Sahib and Guru Nanak School were destroyed.
“It is probably a mistake in the news reporting,” he said.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills DC PS Dkhar said he has not seen any report about any building being destroyed in the area during the recent unrest.
