SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said the government will examine the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018, if it is asked to do so.
Conrad Sangma told reporters on Wednesday that the governor has not yet sought the state government’s views on the bill.
“The deputy chief minister has already come up with the statement that the district council has the autonomy to make its rule,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said he has nothing to say on the bill until it reaches the government.
“If the governor feels he needs consultation with the state government, we will tell you something by that time,” he added.
The citizens are divided over the bill with many women activists in the state denouncing it.
As per the bill, any Khasi woman who marries a non-Khasi will lose her Khasi status and all privileges and benefits as a member of the tribe. This will also apply to her offspring who will be deemed as non-Khasi.
