NONGPOH: In a sting operation conducted along with media persons on Tuesday evening, the North Khasi Hills unit of the Khasi Students’ Union found that the infiltration police were not performing their duty as many vehicles were seen plying without any check.
The union had on the same day itself, set up its own infiltration check gate to prevent immigrants from entering the state following the fallout of the NRC final draft list in Assam.
A video was also captured where it was seen that vehicles including tourist and local taxis were not even asked to stop at the infiltration gate in Byrnihat which has irked the union leaders.
However, what surprised the union leaders the most was when the night super buses arrived. One of the handymen was seen entering the infiltration office but when the ASTC night buses arrived, none of the handymen got out of the buses. This has raised suspicion of malpractice by the staff of the infiltration check gate in Byrnihat.
In one of the videos, it was seen that when the union leaders were inside the office, the handyman of one night super bus tried to enter the infiltration office but was stopped from doing so by the infiltration police who were on duty outside.
The officer-in-charge at Byrnihat, L Syiem denied the allegations of malpractices and clarified that the handymen of night super busses usually enter the office as they have to provide the registration number of the vehicles along with the details of where they come from and where they are heading which are then entered in a register.
The union leaders also met the deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi on Thursday to apprise her on the issue of illegal immigrants and urged her to conduct an inquiry into the alleged malpractices of the infiltration police at Byrnihat. The deputy commissioner assured to conduct a probe into the matter.
Addressing the media persons, the union leaders expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting with the deputy commissioner.
