SHILLONG: The KSU’s proposal to conduct an NRC-like exercise in Meghalaya was sent to the Political Department on Thursday, a day after its members submitted it to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that he did not give any assurance to members of the Khasi Students’ Union as it was a “sensitive issue”.
“If need be, we will discuss in the Cabinet whether an NRC-like exercise is required in the state or not,” he said.
In a letter to Sangma, KSU had pointed out that an exercise similar to the National Register of Citizens with 1971 as the cut-off year should be expedited so that doubtful antecedents can be flushed out and which will contribute to the continuous survival of the indigenous communities.
Reacting to a query about Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev’s letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Tynsong said that on July 31, there was confusion and the government had directed the DGP to talk to Assam on the matter and the issues were later sorted out there itself.
Dev had complained about Meghalaya police and KSU restricting people from Cachar district in Assam from entering Meghalaya without citizenship papers following the publication of the final draft of the NRC list.
“May be the MP was misinformed by some people,” Tynsong said.
