Security hightened in view of Republic Day boycott call

By Our Reporter

Shillong: The State police have intensified security in the entire State in view of the upcoming Republic Day celebration.

State DGP N Ramachandran, on Sunday told The Shillong Times that police is keeping a close vigil in all parts of the State to ensure that the Republic Day celebration passes off peacefully.

“Central forces have been deployed for general duty as well as to enhance security for the Republic Day,” Ramachandran said.

Security has been stepped-up in the State in view of the Republic Day boycott called by several Northeast-based militant outfits including the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

The State police, meanwhile, is keeping a close watch on the activities of the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) following the killing of two tollgate keepers of Songsak village, West Khasi Hills district on Thursday.

The extortion-related killings were orchestrated by the GNLA to create a fear psychosis among people, particularly the coal businessmen of the area.

According to Ramachandran, the State police is keeping a strict check on extortion demands by militants considering that this is the peak season for coal trade across the State.
