SHILLONG: Former KHADC CEM PN Syiem feels that checking of influx is more important in the state to protect the indigenous community of the state.
He made the comment while being questioned about the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second Amendment) Bill which was passed recently by the KHADC.
He alleged that he does not see the urgency from anyone to solve the problem of influx in the state.
He added that politicians should think properly about the pros and cons of any matter before taking a call on anything. “ We should not think emotionally but politically on issues before us “, Syiem said.
Check papers before hiring workers: KHNAM
The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has said private and public contractors should refrain from hiring labourers from outside the state without verifying documents as a precautionary measure to check influx of immigrants.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, KHNAM has extended its support to implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Inner Line Permit (ILP).
KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said the police department should carry out regular checks at various project sites.
Again, KHNAM stated that all private companies operating in the state are to be advised not to recruit fresh employees without proper verification and without consultation with the police department.
He added that additional forces and additional check gates at all entry and exit points are deployed and that the Dorbar Shnong has to be vigilant to curb the issue of illegal immigrants.
With the state government keen to discuss the NRC exercise, Saibon found the response of the state government encouraging.
Stating that Meghalaya has been a soft target of illegal immigrants for the past three decades, Saibon said the demand for NRC should be given due consideration.
Fearing the entry of illegal immigrants whose names were left out from the NRC draft list, Saibon suggested that ILP be implemented.
