SHILLONG: KHNAM MLA Adelbert Nongrum on Friday raised concerns on the growing menace of drug abuse in the state and called for a strong law to curb the trend.
Speaking at a workshop on ‘Psychological and illegal impact and society’, Nongrum said setting up rehabilitation centres is not enough and “proper counselling and guidance is necessary for victims of drug abuse as it will make them productive members of society”.
Terming the trend as ‘hidden epidemic’ posing threat to social stability, Nongrum said, “The government should take interest in coming up with strong laws to curb drug abuse.”
The workshop was organised by New Hope Centre and sponsored by the government under the Voluntary Action Fund through the District Planning Officer, East Khasi Hills.
