TURA: East Garo Hills police have ordered an investigation into the death of a village school teacher who suddenly passed away a few days after being detained overnight by police in Dagal outpost.
The investigation into the death of Hillary Ch Momin has been ordered by the district superintendent of police, R T G Momin, following complaints by villagers who accuse the police of assaulting him during his night in a police lock up.
A police Inspector has been directed to furnish his findings within a week’s time.
The teacher was picked up from the market area by a police team led by the Dagal outpost in-charge on the night of August 4th, on the grounds of creating public nuisance while being drunk. He was placed inside the lock up for the night and released the next afternoon. Shockingly, he passed away a week later.
Angry villagers have accused the police of severely assaulting him on the night of his detention.
Following the death of the teacher, the district police have relieved the Dagal outpost police officer-in-charge, N Nongkhlaw, of his duties pending the enquiry report. The said officer, who is currently on leave, has been attached to Williamnagar police station, it is reported.
Meanwhile, a separate probe is being ordered by the district administration following an FIR against the officer in charge being lodged by the family of the deceased teacher.
