SHILLONG: In a bid to save funds for better use in the education sector, the State Education department has decided to introduce a new policy whereby teachers would undergo their on-job trainings online instead of taking leaves for the same.

“We have decided to introduce this policy in order to save the State Government from paying double salaries at the same time,” Education Minister Prof RC Laloo told reporters here on Monday.

Under the present system, the government, apart from compensating for the teacher on training, also needs to pay the stop-gap replacement thus resulting in double usage of funds. But with the online training in place, the Government would now cash in on the salary of the substitute teacher which according to Prof Laloo would be used to provide scholarship for young students aspiring to become future teachers.

“We would offer this scholarship to deserving candidates this year onwards,” the education minister added. According to Laloo, the state government would take steps to oversee the functioning of the private institutions, especially ones receiving financial assistance from the government. “The government is committed to see that these institutions do not overcharge from the students,” he said.
