SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government has decided to lift the ban on import of fishes to the state with effect from August 22.
The statement came from the Health and Family Welfare Minister, AL Hek after a delegation of fish wholesalers and retailers met him here on Thursday.
AL Hek said that the ongoing ban on the import of fish would be over on August 22 and fished could be imported to the state after that.
He, however, made it clear that the tests for detecting formalin in the fishes would continue and since Government would not compromise with the health of the people.
It was last month when Meghalaya government had imposed ban on import of fishes for 15 days, after samples of such fishes tested positive for the presence of carcinogenic substance formalin. The ban was later extended by another 15 days.
