SHILLONG: After two and a half months of the recent unrest in Shillong, the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate on Monday lifted night curfew from the whole of Shillong.
The magistrate informed that in view of the improvement in law and order in the city, night curfew has been totally lifted in the whole of Shillong from Monday.
On May 31 after the locals were assaulted in Harijan Colony, a huge mob gathered in Motphran and pelted stones at the police.
Following the large scale violence, curfew was clamped in the entire city from June 1 to contain the situation.
Though curfew was lifted from Monday, security forces will continue to remain in vulnerable areas.
“There is no reduction of force and with the withdrawal of curfew, vigil will be intensified by the security forces,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters on Monday.
Asked about the status of the High Level Committee, Tynsong said that the work of the panel was still on.
