SHILLONG: Traders in Nepal’s Biratnagar have shown interest in exporting rubber produced in Meghalaya and has approached the authorities concerned in the state.
Anil Shah, the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries there, said recently that tyres and tubes manufacturers in Biratnagar want to buy rubber from Meghalaya. “However, we are yet to do any groundwork to find out how much is produced in the northeastern state. But the CM sir (Chief Minister Conrad Sangma) said Meghalaya is a big producer,” he said.
Shah had participated in the Shillong Roundtable organised recently by Asian Confluence. Trade opportunity among BBIN (Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal) countries was the main focus of the two-day discussions.
A senior official in the government said there was only an informal proposal and “we have asked them to give details of their requirement”.
Asked whether Meghalaya produces enough rubber for export, the official said, “We too have to find out how much is produced and what is the internal requirement. I have to discuss with other departments concerned.”
Shah said the traders in Biratnagar would also be keen on importing wooden floor and doors from Meghalaya if the cost is sustainable.
