SHILLONG: Mawlai is the entry point to Shillong and also one of the most clogged areas which remains jam- packed with vehicles on most of the occasions. In a bid to solve the problem of traffic congestion in the area which spreads to other parts of the city, the local MLA, P.T Sawkmie has decided to take up the matter of constructing a flyover in the junction with the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari.
Talking to media persons, Sawkmie said he would raise the matter with the union minister shortly after the by-polls.
He said the officials of the department who have conducted an inspection in the area are of the view that a flyover is feasible in Mawlai.
The idea if materialised would go a long way in easing traffic in the Shillong.
Though there are talks since ages to construct flyovers in different parts of the city to ease traffic such plans never took shape owing to legal hurdles and peculiar land tenure system.
Right now, most of the junctions in the city remain clogged with vehicles on most time of the day and police are somehow managing the situation by converting many roads as one way.
