Bhopal: Renewing his demand that Dow Chemicals’ sponsorship for 2012 London Olympics be terminated on moral grounds, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged the Centre to register a strong protest.

In his letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr Chouhan lamented that Dow Chemicals — which bought Union Carbide, the company responsible for the Bhopal gas disaster in 1984 — had not been removed from the sponsorship of London Olympics.

He said the Centre should decide against participating in the 2012 Olympics if its demand for removing Dow Chemicals is not met by the organising committee, according to an official release issued here on Friday. Referring to the resignation of sustainability commission’s senior member Meredith Alexander, he said Dow Chemicals was linked to the world’s worst industrial tragedy.

The Chief Minister has also written to Union Sports Minister Ajay Makan that it was necessary to get Dow Chemicals removed from the sponsorship of London Olympics on moral grounds.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Secretary Badal Saroj described the decision of the Olympic organising committee to not remove Dow Chemicals from the sponsorship of 2012 London Olympic Games as the result of lax attitude of the Centre in the matter. (PTI)
