Large turnout for Williamnagar marathon

TURA: Over 800 contestants participated in what was the first ever marathon organised by the Mikkimbe Chedillang Youth Club, Kusimkolgre-B at Williamnagar on Sunday. People from all age groups braved the morning chill and mist to participate in the event conducted under the theme “Run for Peace”.

The race was flagged off by cheif guest Jonathone N Sangma of Rongrenggiri Government Higher Secondary School, who was also the donor of the event.

“Peace is the need of the hour in Garo Hills and all of us have a role to play in it,” Sangma said.

The enthusiasm of the participants was encouraging for the organisers and Sangma said, “Through events like these we want to encourage youngsters from East Garo Hills to take up sporting activities more seriously.”

He also asked the police force who are occupying the indoor stadium here to shift to another location as the sports lovers of Williamnagar are not able to use the facilities.

Meanwhile, Nikseng Marak won the first prize in the men’s category and was awarded a Bajaj Discover Motor Bike. In the women’s categoryMeni M Sangma won the first prize along with a Scooty Pep.
