SHILLONG: The State Government has been delaying the launch JNNURM buses for some reason or the other. Meanwhile miscreants are taking advantage of the delay in introducing the buses on the city roads.
The buses which are yet to hit the roads are parked at Saw Lad MTC premises for months. This has resulted in miscreants stealing five rear view mirrors from the JNNURM buses which are valued at Rs 5000 apiece.
The incident took place on the night of June 20 when miscreants stole certain parts of the unused buses sanctioned by the Central Government for the people of the State.
The miscreants even had plans to take out the HSD oil from the vehicles. In the process they damaged the cover of the diesel tank which is valued at around Rs 10,000.
It may be mentioned that months have gone by since the Government came up with the idea of introducing the JNNURM buses in the city but till date the buses only seem to frustrate a long cherished dream of people for better public transport.
When contacted, police sources were not in a position to give any details of the incident as the Officer in-charge of the Madanriting police station could not be contacted.
The State Government is citing reasons that minute details about the project are yet to be cleared and the details of the proposal are yet to be presented before the State Cabinet.
The Central Government under the JNNURM had sanctioned 120 buses for the State which included 100 mini buses and 20 standard buses but the project is constantly delayed leading to the outcry of commuters who are irked by the arbitrary services provided by the local taxis.
