SHILLONG/ NEW DELHI: A flood alert has been sounded in Garo Hills following the swelling of the Brahmaputra in Assam, a senior official in the Meghalaya government said on Friday.
China has already alerted India that t would release huge amount of water from the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) on its side following a record downpour.
The Tsangpo broke a 150-year-old record with swollen waters. China has also informed India about a possible flood-like situation in downstream states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, which might have a cascading effect on other states.
PW Ingty, additional chief secretary in-charge revenue and disaster management in Meghalaya, said the concern “is that if flood water reaches Dibrugarh and the Brahmaputra, there is all likelihood of water coming into Garo Hills”.
In 2014, the swelling of the Brahmaputra had caused floods in Garo Hills killing 30 people.
