Navy divers roped in to assist search for drowned family in Dikhow River in Assam

GUWAHATI:  A 10-member navy diving team from Eastern Navy Command from Visakhapatnam has been airlifted at the request of district administration of Sivasagar district for assisting the rescue operation that has been launched in Dikhow River in Sivasagar to trace five members of a family who along with her swift desire car skidded into the river at Dechial village on the night September 1.

Divers from Army’s Special Force under Spear Corps based in Dimapur, joined the search operation in Dikhow River on Monday morning.

A defence source informed that Sivasagar district administration of Assam has sought assistance from Indian Navy divers to help the NDRF and SDRF teams to locate the vehicle of the family that was drowned in the river. The Navy divers have been airlifted from Visakhapatnam by an IAF AN 32 aircraft.

A businessman from Guwahati, Haren Bora, his wife, his mother and two daughters were travelling in the car when it skidded off to the swelling river, a tributary of Brahmaputra River.

The search operation launched since the morning of September 2 has failed to locate the vehicle or any of the drowned persons from the bosom of the river.

Meanwhile, 14 divers of Army Special Force unit under the Spear Corps based in Dimapur, who were requisitioned by Sivasagar district administration, commenced a search operation on Monday morning. The Army informed that the river is 70-80 meter wide with strong currents, making the search operation a bit slow.

The water of the river too has become muddy due to the recent rains and that is, also delaying the search. The army divers are being assisted by the NDRF personnel and local villagers.
