SHILLONG: The central executive committee (CEC) of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) informed that the party has accepted the resignation of its MLA and MDC Adelbert Nongrum from the post of working president on Sept 3.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, general secretary of KHNAM Freewelson Marpna said the regional party expressed surprise at the move of Nongrum to oppose the party’s decision to field Thomas Passah from Jaiaw constituency by making plans to field another candidate.
“This act (of Nongrum) is unacceptable to the party and it has crossed all lines of tolerance,” he said.
The party has also decided not to field any Lok Sabha candidate as it has accepted the resignation of working president THS Bonney, who was earlier projected as the party’s candidate for Shillong Lok Sabha seat in 2019.
Nongrum, however, is exploring several options to deal with the infighting in the party.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Nongrum said he would remain with KHNAM as he was instrumental in keeping the party intact when there was a split a few years ago.
He also added that there are other options like merging with another party since he is the lone member in the Assembly.
Nongrum asserted that he would stand by his decision to put up candidates of his choice in Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah and Jaiaw.
The leader added that he would put up candidates in several other constituencies.
He also called for a change in the leadership of the party to ensure unity.
