JOWAI: Illegal plying of private cars as taxi within Khliehriat Civil Sub-Division still continues despite various attempts taken up by the District Transports Office and the District Administration to ban such illegal plying of private cars.

Sources informed that the DTO Office, Jowai has received around 200 applications. However, 50 permits have been issued to vehicle owners.

In a bid to check illegal plying of private cars as taxis, the District Regional Transport Authority in Jaintia hills last year decided to issue more than 300 local taxi permits to vehicle owners within Khliehriat Region with a view to replace private cars with local taxis.

However, non cooperation from vehicle owners besides ineffective implementation of the motor vehicle Act and failing to take stern action against vehicle owners by the concerned authority, the illegal plying of private cars as Taxis still continues in the entire sub-division.In the past, various Jaintia based NGOs have lodged several complaints with the concerned authority and with the government against illegal plying of vehicles in the area but none has taken up the matter seriously.

Speaking to the Jaintia hills District Transport Officer, C. Khonglam informed that his office could not speed up the execution of the resolution taken up by the RTA Board due to non cooperation from the public residing within Khliehriat Civil Sub-divison’

“Unless the people comeforwad to help us thorough their active cooperation, it is not possible to implement any of the decision taken up by the RTA board meeting in order to do away with the illegal plying of private cars as local taxis”.
