GUWAHATI:  Bharat bandh called by Congress party on Monday  has affected life in Assam  especially because of  disruption in public transport system and rail communication between Barak Valley and Assam Valley. A large number of Congress party members including former minister Rakibul Hussain have been arrested by police for trying to enforce the bandh in different parts of the state.

Congress workers came on the highways in different districts to enforce the bandh called against spiralling fuel prices  while there were reports of clashes between Congress workers and  members of the ruling BJP from many parts of the state.

The bandh has paralysed life in Bodoalnd Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTAD) areas  as well as Barak Valley districts . The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has cancelled Silchar-Guwahati fast passenger train service on Monday.

The bandh has had mixed response in capital city of Guwahati where many business establishments kept the shutters down . Some of the education institutions too remained close. Government offices are functioning here,  but commuters are facing severe difficulty because of non-operation of private city bus services and other private city transport services. The few Assam State Transport Corporation buses plying on the road have not been able to provide adequate service. Private vehicles, however, are plying  normally on the road in the city.
