Khasi resident killed in Assam-M’laya border

SHILLONG/ NONGPOH: Tension gripped a disputed Assam-Meghalaya border village after a local resident died following the assault of another person on Tuesday prompting Chief Secretary Y Tsering to seek a report into the matter.
The chief secretary also asked the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner to get in touch with her counterpart in Assam to follow up the case.
According to police, around 10 pm on September 9 Romesh Thapa of Umsohphoh, Madan Umwang, assaulted Tyngshain Mukhim (37) following a scuffle at Umsohphoh village under Block-II in the Ri Bhoi border area.
As a result, the victim sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to NEIGRIHMS and later his relatives took him back to Khlieh Umwang. However, on Tuesday, the victim succumbed to his injuries three days after the assault.
Cops fight for postmortem
Sources said the Assam police came to Khlieh Umwang to take the body for postmortem.
The Ri Bhoi police also rushed to the village on Wednesday for inquiry and wanted to take the body for postmortem. The family of the deceased man was shocked as police from across the border were fighting over conducting postmortem.
After a day-long discussion between the Assam and the Ri Bhoi police and with the intervention of higher authorities from both the states that the body was brought to Nongpoh Civil Hospital before it was handed over to the family for last rites.
In this connection, the FKJGP, North Khasi Hills District through its president, Bashar Dhar and KSU, Raid Nongtung Circle by its president, Edmond Shadap has strongly condemned over the incident and urges the state government to take seriously for permanent demarcation of border dispute so that people residing in the border area will not face such atrocities just because of the border problems.
