LPG transporters’ association suspends stir for two months

GUWAHATI: Northeast (Packed) LPG Transporters’ Association which has been on strike since September 9 disrupting supply and distribution of the cooking fuel all over the region, has decided to suspend their strike with effect from Friday evening for two months on being assured by authorities that their demands will be addressed to within the period.
The decision much to the relief of LPG consumers in the region came following a meeting with of the LPG transporters’ association with the representative Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Phani Bhusan Chowdhury here earlier in the day.
The transporters will hold the next meeting with authorities on November 20 next, according to the adviser of the association, Kumud Nath.
The transporters have been assured that their demands will be addressed to within these two months period.
An acute crisis of LPG cylinders was looming over the region with the indefinite strike resorted to by the Northeast (Packed) LPG Transporters’ Association since September 9 as the association had stopped transportation of cylinders to the LPG distribution outlets across the Northeast to protest against the alleged alterations in the terms and conditions of the tendering process by the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd authorities and subsequent reduction of profit margin by 20 per cent besides alleged shifting of the operations of the IOCL head office from Guwahati to Kolkata.
Work in at least six LPG cylinder bottling plants in Assam and a few others across the Northeast came to a halt since the strike was undertaken on Sunday.
