1.42 lakh people hit by Assam floods

GUWAHATI: A population of 1,42,385 in 362 villages in six districts in central and upper Assam have been affected by a fresh wave of floods, the bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Sunday.

The Central Water Commission report stated that the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur) and Dhubri (Dhubri), Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali in Sonitpur were flowing above danger level.

The affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Golaghat, Majuli and Dibrugarh. Dhemaji district is the worst hit with as many as 236 villages lying submerged in the deluge triggered by widespread rainfall activity over the past few days.

No loss of human life has been reported so far.

The new wave of floods has also taken a toll on crop area with as many as 11532 hectares in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur,
Majuli and Dibrugarh districts damaged by the deluge.

The Met office has predicted rain in isolated areas of Assam along with its neighbouring states in the next 24 hours and heavy rain on September 20, which indicates that there might not be any let up to the deluge for another week or so. Floods in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have also taken toll in the adjoining districts.
