SHILLONG: Former Congress leader RG Lyngdoh said on Sunday DD Lapang’s resignation would further weaken the party.
Lyngdoh, while replying to a question on the reasons for exodus of leaders from the Congress, said there were leadership and discipline issues which needed to be addressed.
“But for your stomach to function properly, you need to purge it sometimes. So maybe this is just a purging that will make the party better,” he said and hoped that the party “rectifies whatever had gone wrong”.
Reckoning that Lapang must have been under “a lot of pressure before taking the step”, Lyngdoh said, “For a man who has been so long in one party to decide now at the fag-end of his career that he is going to leave the party was not an easy decision.”
“Something very wrong must have troubled him. I hope there are genuine reasons that affect the people,” he added.
With many veterans leaving, the party’s future now depends on young leaders, he observed.
When asked whether he was planning to return to politics or join the Congress, Lyngdoh said, “No plan to return to politics and no plan to go back to Congress.”
