SHILLONG: The two MeECL engineers, kidnapped by GNLA insurgents from near Tura on January 24 last, were released on Saturday night at around 10:30 pm, sources informed.
The two junior engineers — Apus Pothmi and Bonnieface Majaw — were released unconditionally and without any harm, the sources added.
Police said that after the militants released the officials, they walked through the jungle and reached the road leading to Rongkhon and contacted their colleague Marshal Swer who later accompanied them to the MeECL office complex.
Swer had also been abducted by the GNLA insurgents along with Pothmi and Majaw, but was later released.
According to police, the GNLA was under pressure from the NGOs and the public as well as from the security forces who had intensified operations to rescue the officials.
Later a police team arrived to know more details about the case from the two officials.
Happy over the release Apsara Diengdoh, wife of Majaw, said that she was informed about the release of her husband at 10.30 pm on Saturday by his colleagues.
“I was able to speak to my husband over phone and he informed me that he was fine,” the relieved wife of the engineer said.
She also informed that Majaw is expected to reach Shillong on Sunday.
According to reports, the two engineers were in good health and they were treated well by the militants.
Police had earlier said that there was no ransom sought for the release of the officials.
Police believe that the GNLA released the officials unharmed due to the protest and condemnation from various quarters.
