SHILLONG: A programme, Aahar, which aims to feed one vegetarian meal to the poor daily from 12 noon to 2 pm on payment of Rs 5 per head, was launched by the Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust on Saturday.

As part of the 14th death anniversary of former legislator Ardhendu Chaudhuri, the Trust distributed the meals to over hundreds of people in front of the house of Harak Chand Jain to eat their fill.

Speaking on the occasion, West Shillong MLA, Mahendro Rapsang said it is the first time that such charitable work has been done in the state and said the good gesture will benefit many people.

Recalling Chaudhuri’s simplicity, humility and his acceptance by everyone, he said, “I learn from him that to win the heart of the people you have to follow in his footsteps. He is really a man taught politicians to be humble, simple and serve the people we represent.”
