SHILLONG: The Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust launched Aahar, which will provide meal to the poor at Rs 5, on Saturday on the occasion of the 14th death anniversary of former legislator Ardhendu Chaudhuri.
The trust distributed meals to hundreds of people in front of the house of Harak Chand Jain in Jhalupara.
Lunch will be given daily from 12 noon to 2 pm.
Speaking on the occasion, West Shillong MLA Mahendro Rapsang said it is the first time that such charitable work has been done in the state and “the good gesture will benefit many people”.
Recalling Chaudhuri’s simplicity, humility and his acceptance by everyone, Rapsang said, “I learned from him that to win hearts you have to follow in his footsteps. He is really a man who taught politicians to be humble, simple and serve the people we represent.”
Managing trustee of Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust Manas Chaudhuri said, “The response is good. There were so many sponsors to donate money. More than 300 people came and it is being held for the first time in Shillong. It is a wonderful experience.”
He said Aahar will be sustained from the resources of the trust, donations from people and even people who want to donate for one day or on special occasions like birthday celebrations and weddings.
