Cops die as car falls into gorge in Jaintia Hills

JOWAI: Two police officers from West Jaintia Hills died on Saturday when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge near Ratacherra.
The duo, inspector in charge of district special branch Narayan Lapang and sub-inspector Emerald Shadap of the Jowai infiltration cell, died on the spot. Shadap’s brother-in-law, who was travelling with them, is in critical condition.
The officers had gone to Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills in Lapang’s personal SUV. The car went off the road and plunged into a gorge between 7.30-8pm.
The East Jaintia Hills SP said Lapang’s body was yet to be pulled up when this correspondent spoke to him around 11pm. The SP added that he did not know why the West Jaintia Hills officers had gone to Ratacherra.
Lapang was from Ri Bhoi district.
Later, while speaking to West Jaintia Hills SP Lakador Syiem, he said the body was not retrieved.
