SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government recruited labour inspectors at Block-levels to ensure that migrant labourers register themselves with the Labour Department.
The order came into existence after several pressure groups in the state reported non-tribal labourers working without work permits and other documents. The groups also demanded the government to take measures in order to prevent influx.
Informing this, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Labour Department, Prestone Tynsong said that it is the job of the inspectors to ensure that labourers till the block-level register themselves with the department. In addition, Tynsong who is also looking after the PWD department has already instructed the officers to ensure that a pre-qualification clause is added where contractors who participate in the tender process must get labour license in advance and it is mandatory for contractors to get labour license for their labourers.
In addition, the department has also urged all the registered contractors to come forward and register their labourers as many workers are not aware that registration is compulsory in the state.
Time and again, it has been seen that different NGOs of the state carry out inspection in many government projects being implemented where labourers are found to be working without legal documents.
