SHILLONG: After a gap of few days, the normal traffic congestion was once again visible in many parts of the city and even on highways on Monday.
For the last few days, traffic along the city was normal but Shillongites on Monday were once again left with no other option but to be stuck in traffic jams.
Additional superintendent of police (traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said that the traffic jam was sudden as people have started to come out since the weather has improved and even some schools have opened.
“There was no break down of trucks, adding the traffic situation was much better than previous times as traffic was continuously moving,” he added.
When asked about the Shillong Traffic Police (STPs) strategy to tackle jams when all schools would be opened, he informed that the traffic police will get tougher with traffic rule violators that ultimately leads to traffic jams.
The only temporary hope now to get a respite from the traffic snarls is the planned diversion of empty trucks through the Shillong Bypass from February 13.
The Umkhen Bridge which is a part of the Bypass would be officially inaugurated on February 13 following which the empty trucks plying through National Highway 40 would be diverted from Lad Umroi through Umkhen bridge via Nartiang to 8 miles in Jaintia Hills and connect to National Highway 44.
According to Lyngdoh, the proposed planned to divert empty tucks from Umkhen bridge would definitely ease the congestion in the city.The official also believed that the SPTS buses have certainly helped in reducing the traffic congestion in the city.
“We should encourage it as if people travels by buses, less vehicles will be on the roads and this would ease congestion to a large extent,” Lyngdoh said here on Monday.
