SHILLONG: Meghalaya recording the lowest ranks in governance and ease of doing business has irked the Opposition in the Assembly on Monday.
Discussing a special motion on the overall development of the state moved by Congress’s P T Sawkmie, H M Shangpliang, also from the Congress, said the state will have to initiate several measures for overall improvement in education, health and other social sectors.
He also expressed concern over many schools in rural areas functioning without roofs.
“When there is rain, the schools are closed down,” Shangpliang said.
On the healthcare system, Shangpliang, quoting the news report in The Shillong Times on the sorry state of affairs at Ganesh Das Hospital in the city, said the patients are ill-treated at the hospital.
Other issues highlighted by Shangpliang were providing jobs to the unemployed youths, plight of farmers, problems of the people living in border areas, among others.
He also stressed the need to have a water policy in the state.
Congress legislators Ampareen Lyngdoh, George Lyngdoh, Mayralborn Syiem, Azad Zaman, Lazarus Sangma and Independent member SK Sunn also raised several issues concerning the state.
Ampareen said the plan of the government to have PPP mode to develop Laitumkhrah market is not acceptable considering the failure of projects undertaken on PPP (Public-private partnership) mode in the past.
