SHILLONG: The Assembly on Thursday discussed at length about the poor condition of roads in the industrial area of Umiam.
Replying to a cut motion moved by Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh, Cabinet Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the project to upgrade, improve and widen the roads within the industrial areas was sanctioned by the North Eastern Council at a cost of Rs 1,353.27 lakh and the total length of road under construction is 4.44 km.
The minister said 25 per cent of the work has been completed and the remaining is likely to be ready by March next year.
Dhar informed that the industrial area was set up in 1976 with a total area of 179.77 acres, adding that the area had total road length of 3.935 km that connects all key locations in the area.
The project consists of upgradation of the existing road by adopting geo-concrete technology and constructing 0.86 km road.
Earlier while moving the cut motion, Lyngdoh lamented that the area lacks waste disposal system and the industrial waste may flow into the Umiam Lake.
He said smoke from the area is affecting local residents and visitors to the nearby areas.
