SHILLONG: With trolling and cyber bullying becoming rampant on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp and women and teens becoming soft targets of cyber crime, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak on Thursday appealed to all social media users to refrain from uploading private information, videos and photos on these sites.
A series of cyber crime cases has been reported where female users were bullied and tarnished by unscrupulous groups or individuals.
A Facebook group, Na Lyngwiar Dpei I Hynniewtrep, recently posted a photograph of a girl along with hateful and racial comments with the intention to tarnish her image.
However, the SP said police are helpless as he pointed out that it is difficult to track down abusers as the websites are functioning from and located in foreign countries.
“It is not easy to get detailed information about individuals who are behind cyber-crime as the websites are covered by foreign privacy laws and they are not sharing any details of the users,” the SP added.
With the police failing to crack down on social media troll and cyber crimes, cases are piled up.
Many women activists were also victims of cyber-bullying and were being abused on social media.
The SP has urged social media users to be more alert and to abstain from posting private information on networking sites.
He also encouraged people to file FIR if they come across such videos or photos tarnishing the image of an individual on social media. There are also demands that police should implement the existing criminal laws to strictly deal with cases of harassment of women and girls over social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp, the SP said.
