GUWAHATI: Two suspected Myanmar nationals who were apprehended by a team of the 14 Assam Rifles recently from Margherita subdivision in Upper Assam have been sent to 14-days’ judicial custody and are currently lodged at Tinsukia jail, police sources said on Saturday.
Kamsu Hakun (25) and Noktiya Hakun (18) were earlier this week apprehended by the security personnel on the basis of information that the two were suspected to be Myanmar nationals. They were later handed over to Ledo police outpost.
“The 14 Assam Rifles had filed an FIR on Wednesday stating that the two persons are suspected to be Myanmar nationals as they could not furnish any documents proving their Indian citizenship,” Amarjyoti Bailung, the officer in-charge of Ledo police outpost, told The Shillong Times over phone.
The duo, who according to police sources, are not related to each other, were arrested under the 1946 Foreigners Act (IPC 14) while a case (number 255/18) has been registered at the police outpost.
“They are currently in 14-days’ judicial remand and lodged at Tinsukia jail since the past three days,” Bailung said.
From the documents submitted, police sources said, it was known that their parents hail from Baharko in Dungri district of Myanmar. However, the youths have been living in Mullong-gaon under Marghertia sub-division in Tinsukia district for some time.
