SHILLONG: Not wanting to be left behind with the ongoing trend to promote tourist spots by many villages in the state, Tyrna village will host the first “Tyrna Living Root Festival” from November 7-8.
Tyrna Elaka in East Khasi Hills falling in Sohra Civil Sub-Division has four villages- Tyrna, Mawshamok, Nongthymmai and Lumsohphie. Sordar of Tyrna Elaka, Donborwell Marbaniang said, “The aim is to promote tourism and eco-friendly environment and to sustain unemployed youth.”
He added that the festival will highlight on the need to preserve and protect the environment. Secretary of Tourism Management Committee, W. Majaw said the locals have witnessed an upsurge in footfall to the village for the last 15 years which is home to the Living Root Bridge Double Decker and other charming sites.Tyrna village is working in collaboration with the Directorate of Tourism, Indian Council for Cultural Relation (ICCR) and Smoky Fall Tribe Resort, Tyrna.
Regional Director of ICCR, M. Singh said, “The festival is a communion of tourism and culture. ICCR promotes local indigenous culture and culture of Meghalaya is part of the village.”
He informed that troupe from other parts of India will participate and showcase the traditional items at the festival.
