Met office forecasts rain across NE in Puja run-up

GUWAHATI: The Northeast will experience enhanced rainfall activity in the run-up to Durga Puja. The Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar here issued a statement on Thursday afternoon informing that the current meteorological analysis and numerical model guidance suggests a significant increase in the spatial coverage as well as the intensity of the rainfall activity at most places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the next two days with slight reduction thereafter.

According to the meteorological analysis, “The very severe cyclonic storm ‘’Titli’ over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha has moved west-northwestwards with a speed of about 13 km per hour during the past six hours and lay centred at 8.30 am on Thursday over south Odisha, about 90 km west-southwest of Gopalpur and 60 km south-southeast of Phulbani.”

“It is very likely to move for next 12 hours and then re-curve northeastwards towards Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha. It is very likely to weaken gradually becoming severe cyclonic storm around noon, cyclonic storm around evening and deep depression by midnight (Thursday),” the statement said.

Available data indicated that light to moderate rain occurred at most places over Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura; at many places over Nagaland; at a few places over Assam and dry weather prevailed over Arunachal Pradesh since Wednesday afternoon.

“Chief amounts of rainfall recorded at 8.30am of Thursday are Baghmara 4cm, Barapani, Sohra, Umiam, Lunglei, Jharnapani and Haflong at 3cm each, Peren, Tamenglong, Kolasib, Lakhipur, Kanchanpur, Bishnupur and Gandachera at two each respectively, Chotabekra, Churachandpur, Sonamura, Kohima, Senapati, Dharmanagar, Imphal, Amraghat, Shillong, A.D.Nagar, Khowai, Ukhrul, Sabroom, Belonia, Bagafa, Phek and Agartala at one each,” it said.
