SHILLONG: The General Administration Department is planning to open Meghalaya circuit houses in Bengaluru and Assam.
The state already has a circuit house at Rehabari in Guwahati but it is small and congested, GAD Minister Comingone Ymbon told reporters on Friday.
“We want to open the new Meghalaya House in Khanapara and we will be happy if we can get land on the Meghalaya side,” he said and added that he has already asked officials to identify land.
However, the minister informed that land in the southern city is expensive and the department is cash-strapped owing to less fund allocation.
The Bangalore unit of the Khasi Students’ Union had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in May asking for a state circuit house in the metropolitan city, which is a favourite destination for students, entrepreneurs, tourists and job-seekers from Meghalaya.
When pointed out that there was shortage of rooms in all the circuit houses, Ymbon said once funds are allotted, the department would construct new circuit houses to accommodate more people.
For visitors from Meghalaya, it is a difficult task to find accommodation in the circuit houses in different cities and they have to go higher up to get rooms.
The state has two circuit houses in Kolkata and New Delhi followed by one each in Mumbai, Vellore and Guwahati.
