TURA: Alert villagers from South West Garo Hills on Saturday night apprehended two people from neighbouring Assam and gave them a sound thrashing before handing them over to the police, after they were found suspiciously loitering around at Chimechamgre Village.

Police informed that the identities of the two men were still to be known as they are currently undergoing treatment, and yet to be questioned by them.

“We still don’t know who they are and why they entered the village late at night. But when villagers saw them, they were suspicious and started beating them up. One of the men sustained a fractured leg during the beating. They were handed over to us and we have taken them to Tura for medical treatment,” a senior police official said.

According to the official, no case was filed with regard to the matter.

Villages in South West Garo Hills near the borders with Assam and Bangladesh have been on high alert after a series of robberies and thefts by cross border criminals were reported in the recent past. To check the situation, members of Village Defense Parties (VDP) along with villagers have been keeping vigil to check the entry of any unknown persons into the village.
