SHILLONG: At a time when cellular companies are making tall promises of staying connected, several villages in the State are yet to be connected with cellular service.
One such area is Mawlasnai, a villager bordering Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills districts.
Several villagers demanded cellular companies should provide their service in rural areas also.
During a recent visit, this reporter found a poor network signal that too with a symbol of roaming. That signal used to last for only few seconds.
When contacted, General Manager Telecom District of Meghalaya George S Marshall said, BSNL is now giving stress on improving connectivity in major towns and “then only one can think of rural areas.”
“Until there is no reliability in connection, there is no point of going further,” he said.
He suggested that the villagers can use satellite phones.
It may be mentioned that y Mawlasnai is not the only village which does not have proper cellular connectivity as there other villages too in the state which is yet to be connected.
